90 Day Fiancé is one of the most diverse reality television series of its time. After ten years and several spin-offs, the franchise has represented dozens of countries. The original series follows international individuals who move to the US on a K1 visa in hopes of marrying their American fiancés. 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days differs from that as it features the journeys of Americans to foreign countries to meet their partners for the first time. On the other hand, 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way documents Americans moving to these countries.
Throughout all of these spin-offs, there have been multiple Americans who made efforts to learn their partner’s culture. Several of these cast members even worked to learn or improve at their partners’ native language, as some had a basic understanding already. These seven Americans in particular have shown advanced fluency in their non-native language in recent years.
Kara Rojer
Kara Rojer married her husband Guillermo Rojer during 90 Day Fiancé Season 9. After moving to Virginia from the Dominican Republic, Guillermo settled down with Kara and later started a family. One of the most interesting aspects of Kara and Guillermo’s segments was their ability to communicate in two languages. The couple sometimes spoke English, while they talked in Spanish at other times.
Kara had become fluent in Spanish before meeting Guillermo, as she lived in the Dominican Republic for some time. It was evident that Kara was very confident in her Spanish speaking skills, which likely got even better after meeting Guillermo.
Clayton Clark
Clayton Clark was featured with his wife Anali Vallejos on 90 Day Fiancé Season 10. Despite a few arguments, Clayton and Anali ultimately got married at the end of the season after she moved to America from Peru. While Clayton was infamous for having a mom who lived in his closet, that wasn’t the only thing viewers noticed about him.
As Anali didn’t speak any English, she and Clayton only communicated in Spanish. In fact, the couple had originally met on a language-learning app. Clayton’s Spanish was excellent and fans observed that he was more skilled in the language than some of the other Americans on the show. For instance, Clayton conjugated verbs perfectly and had an expansive vocabulary.
Ashley Campbell
Ashley Campbell is another American 90 Day Fiancé cast member who is fluent in Spanish. During 90 Day Fiancé Season 10, Ashley married her Ecuadorian husband Manuel Velez after he moved to the US. The couple later returned for 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? Season 8. As Manuel doesn’t speak any English, he and Ashley converse in Spanish. During Season 8, Ashley tried to convince Manuel to take English lessons but he didn’t stick with them.
It’s evident that Ashley’s Spanish skills are strong and she communicates effectively in the language. While she may forget to conjugate a verb now and then, there’s no question that Ashley’s Spanish is impressive.
Daniele Gates
Daniele Gates was featured with her husband Yohan Geronimo on The Other Way Seasons 4 and 5. During a trip to Yohan’s home country of the Dominican Republic, Daniele met him and quickly fell in love. It wasn’t long before the couple got married and Daniele decided to move permanently to the DR. While Yohan didn’t speak any English, this wasn’t a problem since Daniele already spoke decent Spanish.
While Daniele knew some Spanish before marrying Yohan, her relationship helped her in improving her skills. Daniele’s Spanish sounds like that of a native speaker and it’s clear that she’s put a lot of work into learning the language.
Steven Johnston
Steven Johnston was a controversial cast member during The Other Way Season 3 but viewers did admire his language learning skills. After meeting on a language learning app, Steven eventually moved to Turkey to marry his Russian wife Alina Johnston. At the start of their relationship, Steven helped Alina practice English while she helped him improve his Russian. The set-up worked out well for the couple, as they are now both fluent in each language.
While Steven and Alina mainly communicated in English, his Russian came in handy at other times. For instance, Steven had no problem communicating with Alina’s mother who only spoke Russian. Compared to other foreign languages, Russian is a hard one for native English speakers to master. Steven had a few flaws but we definitely give him some credit for this!
Patrick Mendes
Patrick Mendes appeared with his wife Thaís Ramone on 90 Day Fiancé Season 9 and later on Happily Ever After? Season 8. When the couple first met in Brazil, there was a large language barrier in between them. Patrick only spoke English whereas Thaís knew Portuguese. Once he realized how determined he was to make things work, Patrick worked quickly to teach himself Portuguese. Once Thaís moved to America, she picked up more English as well. The couple now communicates in both English and Portuguese.
Despite Patrick’s dad living in Brazil, he only gained exposure to Portuguese after meeting Thaís. It’s admirable that Patrick was able to become fluent in the language so fast to make things work with Thaís.
Brian Muniz
Brian Muniz is currently appearing with his girlfriend Ingrid on Before The 90 Days Season 7. After talking online for two years, Brian decided to travel to Brazil to meet Ingrid for the first time. This isn’t Brian’s first time in Brazil, however, as he’s had several relationships there in the past. Due to spending so much time in Brazil, Brian explained that he eventually became fluent in Portuguese.
Since Ingrid doesn’t speak English, Brian’s Portuguese has been quite useful. Brian has a vast vocabulary in Portuguese and uses advanced phrases and metaphors when speaking. Brian’s Portuguese is excellent and it’s honestly hard to tell that he isn’t a native speaker.
