Kings of Leon are back to announce that their ninth studio album, Can We Please Have Fun, which will be released on May 10th. The band has also revealed the album’s lead single, “Mustang,” and mapped out a lengthy 2024 tour.
Can We Please Have Fun was produced by trusted hitmaker Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), and marks Kings of Leon’s first album with Capitol Records. According to a statement from the band, Can We Please Have Fun aims to take Kings of Leon’s established sound and take it all a little less seriously. “It was the most enjoyable record I’ve ever been a part of,” says vocalist Caleb Followill. “It’s like we allowed ourselves to be musically vulnerable,” drummer Nathan Followill says. “I love it when a rock band is not embarrassed to admit that every song doesn’t have to be on 11.”
As a preview, the band has offered “Mustang,” Can We Please Have Fun’s rollicking lead single. Built on a bluesy riff, Caleb Followill takes an observational stance and offers up impressionistic, contrasting images. “A muscle magazine next to the toilet/ I’m getting big and strong just thinkin’ about it,” he sings, before bellowing out the chorus’ central question: “Are you a mustang or a kitty?” From just the first single, the band’s emphasis on “fun” is certainly evident — there’s a silliness that characterizes “Mustang” through and through. Kings of Leon will embark major North American tour in support of Can We Please Have Fun this summer. After a few spring dates at Latin American festivals and a lone London date on June 30th, KoL will formally kick off their 2024 tour in Austin, Texas on August 14th. They’ll then hit cities like Phoenix, Los Angeles, Vancouver, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Nashville, concluding the tour on October 5th with a date in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
