Two newcomers took the top spots at last weekend’s box office with Challengers and Unsung Hero logging in $15 million and $7.73 million respectively, and unseating former chart-topper Civil War, which posted just over $7 million during its third weekend. This week will see two more new wide releases make their way into North American cinemas with the release of stuntman action-comedy The Fall Guy, and the horror feature, Tarot.
Beginning its run in 4,002 theaters, The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stuntman who, after a near career-ending accident, must track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. Emily Blunt co-stars and plays Gosling’s ex-girlfriend and first-time director. David Leitch directs the big screen feature which is based on the 1980 television series of the same name, starring Lee Majors and Heather Thomas (who make cameo appearances in the film).
As previously mentioned, the other film making its theatrical debut this week is the supernatural-horror movie Tarot. The film which is based on the 1992 novel “Horrorscope” (which was also the original title of the film) follows a group of college friends who after having their tarot cards read, begin dying in similar ways to their tarot card fate. Directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Tarot will be available in 3,104 movie houses.
Coming back to theaters for its 25th anniversary is the 1999 mega-blockbuster, Star Wars Ep. I: The Phantom Menace. The film took in a whopping $431 million during its opening venture and added another $44 million from a 2012 re-release, which catapulted it past the $1 billion mark worldwide. The latest release will be available in 2,700 locations.
Looking ahead to next week we see the release of two more new wide releases in the way of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and parody film, Not Another Church Movie. The fourth installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise reboot will start out in approximately 3,900 movie theaters.
