Inside Out 2 was off and running at the domestic box office last weekend as the animated sequel over-performed most predictions (including ours), pulling in an outstanding $154.2 million in its opening three-day frame. Possibly even more impressive yet, the film has increased its daily box office since Monday, when it posted $22.42 million in earnings. The film took in $28.83 million on Tuesday and $30.1 million on Wednesday, the latter marking the third largest non-opening Wednesday at the box office of all time. Once again playing in 4,440 locations, the Pixar film should have no trouble staying atop the chart.
Up new this week is the latest from Focus Features in The Bikeriders. Starting out in 2,641 cinemas, the film follows the rise of a midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves over the course of a decade from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group’s unique way of life. The 60s-set drama stars Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is the Russell Crowe supernatural horror, The Exorcism. The film, directed by Joshua John Miller, follows a troubled actor who begins unraveling while on the set of his latest horror film. We will update the count for The Exorcism once it is reported.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is Bad Boys: Ride or Die, still playing in a solid 3,781 venues. Occupying the third-widest-release slot is The Garfield Movie, dropping nearly 400 locations, but still widely available in 3,013 cinemas. The fifth-widest release is John Krasinski’s IF, which can still be seen in 2,504 theaters.
Worth mentioning is the release of the Celine Dion documentary, I Am: Celine Dion. The film, which will be available in 480 locations, shows a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic superstar’s struggle with a life-altering illness. Opening in five locations this weekend, but expanding to approximately 500 theaters next weekend, is the Yorgos Lanthimos comedy drama, Kinds of Kindness.
Looking ahead to next week, we see the debut of four new wide releases. The first, which is opening on Thursday, June 27, is the dystopian Bollywood sci-fi action film, Kalki 2898 AD. Opening on Friday is the first of four chapters in Kevin Costner’s western epic, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1. The movie, featuring a vast array of Hollywood talent, is expected to begin its run in approximately 3,200 theaters. Also making its arrival in domestic theaters is the third installment in the A Quiet Place franchise as A Quiet Place: Day One hits theaters. Lastly, the Japanese anime film, Blue Lock The Movie -Episode Nagi- will make its big screen debut in approximately 900 North American cinemas.
