Disney is projecting that Inside Out 2 will hit $100 million this weekend, although just barely (their projection is exactly $100 million). If it hits that milestone, it would be only the seventh film to do so, and the first since the pandemic—Barbie currently holds the post-pandemic record with $93 million. Meanwhile, The Bikeriders is doing respectable business on debut, and no less than three other new films will make the top 10.
Here’s how the weekend numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…
Inside Out 2’s hold is nothing short of spectacular. After its opening weekend, our model predicted a final domestic total of $455 million for the film, based on comparable openings. Its new prediction this morning is $558 million, and something well beyond that remains a possibility. After a slow May, this is exactly the boost the market needed.
The Bikeriders’ opening is respectably ahead of the model’s prediction, and could set it up for a good run in theaters, given the relative lack of competition.
The lack of strong performers in May means that there’s some space for independent distributors to get their films into the top 10, and no less than three have done so this weekend. The Exorcism is doing the best among them with a respectable $2.4 million for Vertical Entertainment. That’s the best ever opening for the distributor, ahead of 2018’s Gotti.
Meanwhile, Magnolia Pictures will earn $2.2 million from Thelma this weekend, and special event Rite Here Rite Now bags $1.4 million for Trafalgar Releasing.
