When The Bachelorette Season 21 began, leading lady Jenn Tran had high hopes of finding love. Jenn made history as the franchise’s first Asian American lead, which was an empowering beginning to what was supposed to be her epic love story. Unfortunately, as fans of the show recently witnessed, Jenn’s journey ended in a nightmare. At one point during her season, Jenn admitted to the men that she potentially saw a future where she ended up alone. Woefully, that is how Jenn’s story ended after all.
While Jenn’s now ex-fiancé is mainly to blame for what went down, he isn’t the only one. There was more than one disappointing man this season and it’s fair to say that Jenn deserved a better group of suitors overall. On the other hand, production isn’t innocent either, as they treated Jenn poorly toward the end as well. From start to finish, Jenn deserved more than she received during The Bachelorette Season 21.
Marcus should’ve handled things better with Jenn Tran
Marcus Shoberg was one of several men who complicated Jenn’s journey to find love. However, Marcus’s impact was more significant than most of the others since he made it to the final two. From early on, it was evident that Jenn had strong feelings for Marcus. While Marcus did seem to return the feelings to an extent, he didn’t seem as confident as Jenn did. After hometowns, Marcus remarked that the other men felt ready to propose to Jenn, but that he wasn’t there yet. From there, things only continued to spiral downhill.
During fantasy suite week, Jenn admitted to Marcus that she was in love with him. Marcus replied that he wasn’t there yet and continued to express doubts about their relationship. Despite being disappointed, Jenn gave him another chance and even took him to the final two. Understandably, Jenn expected Marcus to be further along by this point, but he was still struggling.
Before what was supposed to be their final date, Jenn tried to get answers from Marcus one last time. During this conversation, he blurted out that he loved her, which seemingly came from nowhere. By this point, Jenn had had enough and decided to send Marcus home. Marcus should’ve handled things better and shouldn’t have stayed around so long if he was so unsure. This potentially cost Jenn the opportunity to connect with another man who was more invested in her.
Devin did Jenn Tran wrong
While Marcus wasn’t great, the real villain of the finale was Devin Strader. After Marcus left, Jenn decided to propose to Devin, as she was madly in love with him. Throughout the season, it appeared that Devin felt the same about Jenn, if not stronger. He declared that he was falling for her after their first one-on-one and later told her he loved her during hometowns. When Devin reached the final three, he became distraught at the idea of Jenn not choosing him or loving him in return.
Jenn and Devin did get engaged at the end of the season, but it was short-lived. During the finale, Jenn revealed that Devin had broken up with her through a 15-minute phone call about a month prior. She explained that after leaving Hawaii, Devin switched up on her entirely. Jenn said that Devin expressed doubts about their relationship that he hadn’t told her during filming and even said that he was never really in love with her.
After ending things with Jenn via phone call, Devin claimed to be hurt by the split but Jenn felt otherwise. Jenn was hurt that Devin immediately followed Maria Georgas on Instagram, as well as the fact that he hit the club with fellow contestant Jeremy Simon. When Devin reunited with Jenn onstage, he didn’t show any remorse for his actions whatsoever. Devin led Jenn on and messed with her heart, which is unacceptable.
Jenn shouldn’t have been forced to watch her proposal to Devin
One of the most uncomfortable moments during the finale was when Jenn was forced to watch a clip of her proposal to Devin. After talking with Devin onstage, host Jesse Palmer asked Jenn if she was ready to see the video. Jenn responded by asking if she had a choice, which was sarcastic as she knew she really didn’t.
Throughout the clip, the camera panned to show Jenn’s reactions as she watched. For almost the entire time, Jenn was seen full-on sobbing in the bottom left corner of the screen. This was just cruel, as Jenn had described the day of the proposal as the best one of her life. It was clear that Jenn felt heartbroken and there was no good reason for her to have to watch that video.
Before bringing out Devin, Jesse even alluded to the fact that they weren’t going to show the proposal right away because of what had happened. After finding out what went down between Jenn and Devin, there was no need to show it. At the very least, Jenn should’ve been given the option to go backstage while it played. The worst part about the whole thing was that she had to watch it sitting next to Devin, who was responsible for the heartbreak she was feeling.
