For Jack Boniface, aka Shadowman, facing his inner demon is a literal occurrence rather than a figurative expression, and he’s learning to embrace and harness his dark side in Shadowman: Soul Eaters, the new four-issue comic book miniseries from Valiant Comics and Alien Books. Written by AJ Ampadu with artwork by Sergio Monjes, Shadowman: Soul Eaters #1 is coming out on October 2nd, and ahead of its release, we’ve been provided with an exclusive preview to share with Daily Dead readers!
In the aftermath of a brutal murder in a New Orleans cemetery, you can see something sinister awaiting the unsuspecting killers in our exclusive preview below, and we also have comments from AJ Ampadu that offer further insights into Shadowman: Soul Eaters, including how he got involved with this new miniseries:
“During my first year at Valiant/Alien, I’ve had the opportunity to write in different genres. The short piece I wrote for “Valiantine’s special” was a mix of action and romantic comedy. “Ninjak Vs Roku” felt more like an espionage revenge story, while I collaborated on the epic multi-character event, “Resurgence.” “Shadowman” belongs to the supernatural genre, quite different from my other Valiant works. As a fan of horror and dark fantasy comics, writing for such an intricately dark character was a great opportunity.”
From Splatterhouse scares to psychological terror, Ampadu discusses the eclectic types of horror that he instilled into Shadowman: Soul Eaters:
“When it comes to horror, there are various types like body horror, psychological horror, Splatterhouse gore, and Lovecraftian, for instance. When working on “Shadowman: Soul Eaters,” I tried to incorporate elements from multiple types of horror and supernatural fantasy. Issue #3 includes a particularly freaky bit of body horror that I believe fans will enjoy. Additionally, there are several horror-themed alternate covers that I think horror collectors should definitely buy.”
Additionally, Ampadu shares how Shadowman: Soul Eaters ties into Valiant’s “Resurgence” superhero crossover event, making it an ideal jumping-in point for readers:
“I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different genres during my time at Valiant/Alien. Lysa Hawkins and Matias Timarchi took a chance on me as a new writer, and it’s evident that they are open to taking the Valiant characters in bold new directions. If you’re looking for a new comic experience, I think you’ll find this book uniquely special. If you’re an older fan of Shadowman, you will be rewarded with lots of lore and familiar faces. If you’ve never read Shadowman or Valiant before, this is still a great jumping-in point. This is also a tie-in to the Valiant superhero event “Resurgence,” which involves just about everyone in the Valiant universe, including Shadowman. It only gets more intense from here!”
