It was a slightly lower beginning for Venom: The Last Dance in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, but the film nevertheless bit off $51 million, making it the number one film in the land, and by a large margin. The last installment in the Venom franchise now holds a six-day North American total of just over $61 million, and has propelled the franchise past $1.5 billion in global earnings. Venom: The Last Dance remains on top in theater counts in its second weekend, playing in 4,131 venues, despite the handful of newcomers entering cinemas.
The largest of the newcomers gracing movie screens this weekend is the drama, Here. The film stars Forrest Gump alum Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, who are reunited with director Robert Zemeckis. Charting multiple families and generations while capturing the human experience in its purest form, Here will make its debut in 2,647 locations.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is the animated feature, Hitpig. Expected to land in 2,000 movie houses, the film follows a clever pig who makes a living catching escaped animals and returning them to their owners. His next job is his biggest yet: return a dancing elephant named Pickles to a maniacal Vegas showman, for a million bucks. When the mission goes sideways, Hitpig must realize that no amount of money is worth losing his newfound friends.
Liam Neeson is back on the big screen this weekend with the release of Absolution, starting out in 1,500 cinemas. The movie follows an aging gangster as he attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly.
Also coming to theaters in wide release this weekend is the survival adventure Lost on a Mountain in Maine. Available in 630 domestic theaters, the film follows a 12-year old boy separated from his family during a storm while hiking on Mount Katahdin, who must fight to stay alive over the course of nine days. The movie is based on the book by the same name.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is Smile 2, showing in 3,235 locations, followed by The Wild Robot, still available in 3,231 venues, and lastly, surprise hit We Live in Time, occupying the fourth place spot with 2,964 locations.
Looking ahead to next weekend we see the release of three new wide releases, including Best Christmas Pageant Ever, set to arrive in approximately 2,750 theaters. Other films set to open are Heretic and Weekend in Taipei. We will update those counts once they are received.
