It’s been speculated over the past few months that Courteney Cox will return to the Scream franchise for the upcoming sixth sequel. Critical thinkers would assume she would, but it wasn’t confirmed until yesterday. Cox has played Gale Weathers, the hard-nosed journalist, for nearly three decades. The release of Scream 7 on February 27, 2026, correlates with the franchise’s thirty-year anniversary.
For some reason, Cox held off on making the official announcement, although she has said in the past she would return. Also, IMDb had her listed as a cast member for a long time.
If you have been paying attention to the Scream 7 news cycle for the past year, you already know the production has been troubled. From losing its reboot stars and director to having to re-vamp the entire script, the franchise is showing its age.
But with Neve Campbell and Cox returning and original creator Kevin Williamson writing the screenplay, we might be critically putting the cart before the horse with speculation. One hopes the filmmakers do more than fan service in this installment. Williamson has proven he still has writing chops with his last script; 2022’s Sick, but how will he do directing? His last directorial job was Teaching Mrs. Tingle in 1999.
It was also announced this week that Mason Gooding will return to his role as Chad, and Anna Camp has been added to the cast. However, further demonstrating the troubled production, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Chad’s twin sister from the last two films has yet to sign a contract.
