‘Oh, Mary!’ Back To Sell-Out With Meg Stalter

Broadway was on a bit of a rebound last week, with box office for the 30 productions jumping up by about 13% over the previous week, hitting a total $34,864,840 with attendance of 273,061 showing a 7% increase over the previous week and 11% over last season at this time.

Just about every production reported box office surges for the week ending July 26, likely a sign that Broadway had shaken off some of the annual Fourth of July-period doldrums and, perhaps even more significantly, some strong showings from Oh, Mary!, Ragtime and, in its final week, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, among others.

In its last week, the critically praised Joe Turner scored the highest gross of its limited four-month engagement, taking $1,183,148 and filling 99% of the seats at the Ethel Barrymore.

Oh, Mary!, meanwhile, was back in fine form with the full-week return of star Meg Stalter, who had missed some performances the previous week due to illness. For her first full week back, Stalter’s turn as Mary Todd Lincoln grossed $1,078,641 and was a virtual sellout at the Lyceum.

Ragtime had another stellar week, breaking its own house record with a take of $1,625,400, the highest weekly gross in the history of Lincoln Center Theater. The Tony-winning Best Musical Revival has been extended three times, with performances now concluding on August 16.

Other sellouts for the week were Cats: The Jellicle Ball, grossing $1,189,431 and apparently getting a big boost from its recently announced August 8 closing date; Death of a Salesman, selling out its usual 7 performances for a take of $2,234,252; Hadestown, $907,358; Hamilton, $2,341,119; MJ, $1,933,319; and The Outsiders, $1,063,041.

Other solid sellers in the 90%-99% of capacity area were & Juliet, Aladdin, Buena Vista Social Club, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Just in Time (99%), Operation Mincemeat, Schmigadoon! (99%), The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, The Lost Boys and Wicked.

Every Brilliant Thing, now starring Tracee Ellis Ross, was at 90% of capacity, jumping about $93,000 from the previous week (to $454,088), a noticeable upturn if still far short of the show’s peak weeks with Daniel Radcliffe and Mariska Hargitay in the solo role.

The five Top Earners for the week were The Lion King, $2,428,755; Hamilton, $2,341,119; Death of a Salesman, $2,234,252; MJ, $1,933,319; ; and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, $1,887,297. With the overall average ticket price for the 30 shows at $127.68, only two productions saw prices pass the $200 mark: Hamilton, $217.91 and Salesman, $212.79. Ragtime came close with $192.95.

Not faring quite as well as their fellow spring arrivals were The Rocky Horror Show, with attendance at 88% of capacity and a gross of $817,231 (the only downturn of the roster, with a $227,522 tumble from the previous week); Titanique, 87% and $789,068; and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), 79% and $608,134.

In the ninth week of the 2026-27 season, Broadway has grossed $317,835,701, down about 7% from last year at this time, with total attendance of 2,599,894 down 1%.
