Clayface Still Boss With Near M WW; Resident Evil Racks Up 0M WW Poised To Scare Away Backrooms – Global Box Office Update

It was an awful weekend at the global box office, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that there’s no major wide Hollywood release (or China local blockbuster title for that matter) more than the Halloween holiday itself impacting worldwide ticket sales.

If there’s any indication of how bad the weekend was, tentpole exhibitor Imax only minted $6M this past weekend around the globe from a combo of The Odyssey ($1.3M WW), Resident Evil ($900K WW), NatGeo Doc Everest: The Other Side ($825K) and myriad local language fare.

While Halloween puts a damper on the domestic box office, that’s not necessarily the case around the world. The holiday is big in the UK, not so much Spain and France; the latter market still impacted by protests. Dia de los muertos is the big event in Mexico and other Latin American countries, impacting moviegoing.

The Nathan Fielder and Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything only has stamped a passport to Turkey right now, so no major grosses coming from offshore (where Sony has the bulk) which leaves Warner Bros/DC’s Clayface as the big macher with $22.8M WW ($10.4M domestic weekend, $12.4M abroad) for a running total of $83M WW off the net $44M production ($44.1M domestic, $38.9M international). You Can See Everything opens in Australia on Nov. 12 and UK on Nov. 20.

    Watch on Deadline

Updated totals on Clayface are UK ($6.1M), Australia ($2.5M), Mexico ($2.5M), France ($2.4M), Brazil ($1.7M), Italy ($1.7M), Spain ($1.4M), Saudi Arabia ($1.4M), Germany ($1.3M), UAE ($1.2M), Taiwan ($949K) and Korea ($891K).

Note the global on Universal/Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s Other Mommy, the other horror comp in the marketplace, remains ahead of Clayface because it began its platform earlier, of course, that pic with an $8.4M global fourth weekend and $107.4M WW ($51.8M int’l, $55.6M domestic). Other Mommy opened to $1.5M in Germany, No. 2 in the market behind local hit sequel Der Perfekte Urlaub. That weekend in is in line with Evil Dead Rise and M3GAN and outperformed all other key comps including Smile, Weapons and The Black Phone. Boosted by Halloween, opening Saturday is the biggest for a non-franchise Horror this year, beating Obsession and Backrooms. In Netherlands, Other Mommy opened with $400K, in line with M3GAN and above Smile, The Black Phone and Black Phone 2. Austria opened to $300K, performing above Smile, Weapons and Black Phone 2. Germany speaking Switzerland debuted to $200K in line with M3GAN, above Smile and Weapons and more than double The Black Phone and Black Phone 2. In Czech Republic and Slovakia, Other Mommy posted a strong debut, ranking No.1 in Czech Republic. Together, these markets count $185K for the weekend, in sync with The Black Phone and above Smile and Black Phone 2.

No. 2 at the global weekend box office is Laika’s Wildwood with $12.3M global second frame ($7.5M domestic, $4.8M overseas), and a running cume of $35.8M ($25M domestic, $10M overseas), well ahead of the lifetime of the stop motion animation’s studio previous feature, Missing Link ($26.5M). FilmNation is handling overseas distribution. The Travis Knight directed movie expanded to 36 new international territories this weekend, bringing its release to 47 countries, with more than two dozen markets still to open over the coming weeks and months. Wildwood opened to No. 1 in Sweden and ranks No. 2 in Brazil, No. 3 in Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. In its second weekend, Wildwood is No. 3 in Australia. Black Bear’s release of Wildwood in the UK at 683 theaters counted a second weekend of $867K and a running cume of $3.7M.

That result outgrossed fellow opener Primetime. Wicker‘s start bested the UK bows of Poor Things, Sense & Sensibility and The Shape of Water. Sony/Constantin’s Resident Evil continues to show that it’s never been walking dead at the box office with a massive global cume of $400M ahead of such horror benchmarks as Sinners ($371.6M), Zach Cregger’s own Weapons (which it surpassed a while ago to become the filmmaker’s highest grossing film ($270M), The Nun ($366M), and it’s $30M short of surpassing the lifetime on 1973’s The Exorcist ($430M). It’s also $600K from overtaking A24’s highest grossing movie ever, Backrooms ($400.6M).

Seventh weekend posted $10M WW ($2.5M domestic, $7.5M from 66 markets and 21,500+ screens) for $242.7M running foreign cume and $157.3M in North America. Resident Evil is the third highest grossing horror film of all time in China and the biggest installment globally of the franchise. Top-performing territory cumes: China $71.4M, UK $19.4M, Mexico $12.7M, Australia $9.6M, Japan $12.7M, France $9.5M, Germany $9.3M, Spain $8.2M.

Domestic finaled at $625.5M, leaving Jurassic World as Universal’s highest grossing movie at the North American box office ($653.4M). Eighty-four territories delivered $2.66M for Odyssey this weekend with China’s 12th weekend at $300K, and a $116M cume; Belgium No. 1 with a $300K 16th weekend and near $17M cume, Germany with $300K and a $68.4M cume and Japan adding $200K in weekend 8 for a $15.6M cume.
