Chloe Zhao’s Golden Globe winner Hamnet and Park Chan-wook’s dark comedy No Other Choice are pumped up the theater count and bucks over a four-day holiday weekend (Monday being Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the U.S.) as Marty Supreme set a new record for A24 and The Lord Of The Rings returned bearing riches.

Focus Features’ Hamnet had a big expansion to 718 theaters (+486), grossing $1.3 million for the three-day weekend and $1.6 million for the four days for a domestic cume of $15 million. The film starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal is seeing strong word of mouth with a 93% audience score and just became the highest rated romance of 2025 on Letterboxd, the popular cinephile social platform.

Neon’s No Other Choice starring Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin is at an estimated $2.2 million for the three days and $2.7 million for the four in a major expansion to 695 theaters (+548) for a $7 million cume.

Row K’s release of Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire had a wide break to 1,101 screens (from 14) in week 2 for a 3-day gross of $1 million, a 4-day gross of $1.23 million, and a cume of $1.43 million.

New openings: Sound of Falling, Mubi’s Cannes Jury Prize winner and Oscar-shortlisted International Feature, debuted on one NYC screen to $11.9k (3 days) and $14.6k (4 days). Expands to top North American markets over the next two weeks.

Moderate: GKids’ release of Kenichiro Akimoto’s All You Need Is Kill, an anime adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel of the same name, is eyeing a $431.8k (3-day) and $520.9k (4-day) debut on 756 screens. That’s the highest grossing film for Studio 4ºC, the famed animation studio behind cult classics like Tekkonkindreet, Memories, Mind Game and The Animatrix. At 94% Fresh with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Night Patrol from IFC Films Entertainment Group opened to an estimated $255k for the three days and $300k for the four days on 800 screens.

Event: Fathom Entertainment’s presentation of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring grossed $3.59 million at 1,686 theaters, no. 7 at the domestic box office. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers rounded out the top 10 with $2.4 million (Saturday and Sunday). The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King grossed an estimated $2 million Sunday. The three are at $8 million for the three days with a $9.5 million projection through Monday.

Fathom partnered with Warner Bros and New Line Cinemas in honor of the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of Fellowship of the Ring with director Peter Jackson recording new intros for each film in the trilogy. Originally only slated for specific days over two weekends — Jan 16-18 and Jan 23-25 — exhibitors have been adding additional days, locations, and marathons. Fathom, WBD and New Line last partnered in 2024 on a theatrical re-release of the trilogy for $8.2 million at the domestic box office.

Also expanding in week 2: All That’s Left Of You, Cherien Dabis’ Oscar-shortlisted multigeneration Palestinian drama from Watermelon Pictures, expanded to 30 locations (from 2) on its second weekend with $86.3k and $113.k, respectively, for the three and four days, and an estimated cume of $177k.

Janus Films expanded Lav Diaz’s Magellan starring Gael Garcia Bernal to four screens adding San Francisco’s Roxie and grossing an estimated $23.3k for the 3 days and $27.7k for the 4 with a new cume of $67.6 k. Adds 15 markets next weekend.

Albert Birney’s Obex from Oscilloscope Labs clocked $7.9k on 8 screens (from 2) its second weekend for a $22.3k cume.

Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme became A24’s highest grossing film ever at the domestic box office with the Timothée Chalamet-starring film passing $80 million and Everything Everywhere All At Once for the four-day weekend.
