Refresh for latest…: While the calendar has clicked over to September, summer vibes are still being felt at the global and international box office. In yet another ascent, and on its 12th weekend of release, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now grossed $1.666B+ globally, overtaking 2019’s The Lion King to become the 9th biggest movie ever at the worldwide box office. The cume through Sunday is an estimated $1,666.2M.
Summer has indeed been good to Disney and its brands, and vice-versa. Between Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Dis boasts the two biggest movies of the year and the only billion-dollar grossers so far. Meanwhile, 20th Century’s Alien: Romulus is chomping its way to $300M global.
Sony/Wayfarer’s It Ends with Us is headed towards the same milestone, and Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 has gruved past the $900M global mark.
Breaking down the weekend, Alien: Romulus was the top Hollywood title as the Fede Alvarez-directed franchise installment gobbled up another $22.6M overseas in the 3rd frame, taking the international cume to $194.7M. Worldwide is at $283.5M through Sunday (these figures do not include the domestic holiday Monday estimates). The $283.5M makes Romulus the second biggest in the Alien series globally, behind only Prometheus.
The offshore drop this session was a strong 46% while the film held the No. 1 spot again in China where audiences have devoured it. The cume there is $92.7M. Maoyan is currently forecasting a $110.7M finish, slightly lower than where the ticketing site had it last weekend. Regardless, it’s had a terrific run in the market which is sharply down overall versus last summer.
Rounding out the Top 5 plays so far are the UK ($14.1M), Korea ($12.6M), France ($9.4M) and Mexico ($7.1M).
The Imax cume is $37.2M, becoming the format’s highest-grossing horror title ever.
Romulus still has Japan to come next weekend.
Columbia Pictures/Wayfarer Studios’ It Ends with Us is similarly nearing the $300M mark globally with a $283.7M cume through Sunday. Overseas accounts for $150M of that after a $15.8M weekend. The slide in the 4th frame internationally was just 32%. Currently playing in 58 offshore markets, the Blake Lively-starrer was No. 1 in 22 and No. 2 in 17.
Tops to date are the UK ($24.2M), Australia ($13.1M), Mexico ($12.6M), Germany ($11.9M) and Brazil ($9.1M).
Still to come on the phenom are Denmark, Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong in September, and Japan in November.
In weekend 6, Marvel/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine added $13.9M from international markets for an overseas cume of $658.4M and a global tally of $1.258B. It is now the No. 7 MCU release of all time worldwide.
Still rocking at No. 1 in Australia among a few other markets, the Ryan Reynolds/Hugh Jackman-starrer dipped by just 34% from last session. Internationally, D&W is the No. 10 MCU release ever.
Through Sunday, the Top 5 are: UK ($70M), China ($59.2M), Mexico ($43.1M), Australia ($40.5M) and Germany ($35.4M).
In Imax, the total is $84M global.
Meanwhile, Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 has crossed the $900M mark globally, now with an estimated $913.8M. The overseas weekend was $12.3M (-26%) for a $559.7M international cume. This is above both Minions: The Rise of Gru and DM3 at the same point (excluding China).
A number of key markets saw exceptional holds on Saturday including 30% uptick in China (where it is the biggest Hollywood animation since the start of the pandemic), UK (+24%), UAE (+21%), Germany (+18%), Argentina (+5%), Spain (+2%), Australia (-12%), Japan (-12%) and Italy (-28%).
All markets have released. Here are the Top 5 to date: UK ($57.5M), China ($56.7M), Mexico ($44.9M), Germany ($37.1M) and France ($33.1M).
Inside Out 2 in total this session added $7.1M from all of international, raising the overseas cume to $1,016.1M. This lifts it to No. 11 on the all-time international chart, having passed The Fate of the Furious. It will pass Jurassic World in short order to move up to No. 10.
The offshore drop was just 28% in the 12th weekend with kids not yet back in school in many areas. In its fifth weekend, Japan decreased by only 21%, despite a major typhoon, taking the cume there to $29.7M.
Here are the Top 5: Mexico ($102.3M), Brazil ($80.2M), UK ($74.2M), France ($63.9M) and Korea ($60.9M).
In local play, Imax set a new opening Wednesday record in Korea with CJ Entertainment’s concert/event release IM Hero: The Stadium. The network of 21 screens accounted for 44% of the opening day gross – while representing just 7% of the market’s screens. The results continued throughout the weekend, with an Imax bow of $1.55M through Sunday, accounting for 46% of the total opening result. This reps the top Imax local-language launch ever int he market.
