Reggie Bannister died on August 9, 2026. He was 80.
Wicked Horror interviewed Reggie’s spouse Gigi earlier this year. At the time Reggie was in hospice care in California; he had been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and rendered bedridden.
Reggie’s death was inevitable yet it still stings immensely. As much as it hurts for his fans, I can only fathom the pain his family and dearest friends are going through right now.
There’s a void in the horror community in his passing. There will never be another character actor like Reggie — come to think of it, there may never be another human being like Reggie ever again.
Bannister’s life story feels like a movie. He was a musician turned Vietnam veteran who kind of stumbled into acting. That he would go on to become one of the most beloved cult horror icons of all time is one of those cosmological flukes so unbelievable, it rubs elbows with the impossible.
Yet it’s unthinkable to imagine a modern horror ecosphere without Reggie. His footprint via the Phantasm films is so immense, you really couldn’t tell the story of genre movies post-1970 without bringing his name up. He may have never been a household name or an A-list celebrity, but in the hearts of horror fans he was practically a saint.
Reggie WAS Phantasm. The late Angus Scrimm may have technically been the face of the vaunted franchise, but Bannister was its heart, soul and consciousness. He was the ponytail-sporting, ice cream truck-driving, quadruple barrel shotgun-toting, Barracuda-driving, extradimensional dwarf-slaying engine of the Phantasm series. The franchise could’ve existed without him, but it certainly wouldn’t have been the same … and I doubt any actor, from any time period, could’ve embodied his flagship character so well.
I mean, his character in Phantasm is LITERALLY called “Reggie.” I’ve always wondered how much of his portrayal of the character was acting and how much of it was surreptitiously autobiographical. Reggie in Phantasm pretty much IS Reggie in real life, albeit with a few comical flourishes here and there.
Everybody has a favorite Reggie moment from the Phantasm universe. Probably my all-time favorite is in Phantasm 3: Lord of the Dead, when he tries to woo Rocky in bed with some of the WORST come-ons in the history of people trying to get laid.
I watched the movie with a crowd of jaded college kids once. When Reggie lecherously cooed “every try vanilla?” to his Black co-star, the audience erupted into some of the longest sustained laughter I’ve ever experienced in a theater before. The greatest comedians of all time couldn’t have made the line work as well as Reggie did. His comedic chops were that good.
Reggie could kick plenty of ass, obviously. Who could forget his chainsaw duel in Phantasm II, or his many encounters with the demonic cop in Phantasm: Oblivion? He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t even remotely look like a traditional action movie hero, but when he threw down you always believed he was capable of cracking a few skulls. Maybe its that real world military toughness, maybe he just got into a lot of street fights when he was a kid. But Bannister definitely had the aura of a real life badass. And he conveyed that in virtually every movie he was in, from Survival Quest to The Demolitonist (which is TOTALLY worth checking out sometime if you’ve never seen it before.)
Bannister was that rare type of actor where, by and large, he was almost always the best thing about whatever movie he was in. There’s not much reason to bother with Silent Night, Deadly Night IV: Initiation or The Mangler Reborn, but as soon as Reggie popped up onscreen you felt vindicated. The film as a whole may not be very good, but you KNEW Bannister was going to turn in an A-plus performance no matter how unsalvageable the rest of the movie was.
That’s the thing that made Reggie different from so many other B-horror heroes. You never got the feeling that he thought he was beneath the material or that he secretly loathed himself for the kinds of movies he made. He gave it everything regardless of the material and I’ve never heard a single bad thing about him from any horror fan. In a fandom infamous for shallow and distant “stars,” Bannister seemed like a genuinely good person. In other words, he was just Reggie being Reggie.
Even Reggie’s split-second cameo appearances in films like Wishmaster and Bubba Ho-Tep are memorable. It’s a bit of a shame that so many people overlooked the last slate of movies he made before his illness brought his career to an end. The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, Not Another B Movie, Bloody Bloody Bible Camp — you could tell Reggie was still having a blast making low budget genre movies. How fitting that one of his final film roles was Phantasm: Ravager — a film that, in hindsight, doesn’t just serve as a concluding arc for his most famous character, but almost seems to portend the final chapter of his own life.
It’s a movie that hits different now. Pretty much everything Reggie was in is going to feel different in his absence. He made us smile, he made us laugh, he exhilarated us. And knowing that he’s no longer with us — in this earthly realm, at least — is saddening stuff.
But I doubt Reggie was the kind of guy who wanted people to mourn him and feel totally dejected and crestfallen. He was a joyous, jubilant person, and I’m sure he’d prefer we reflect on his life and times instead of thinking about his exit from the mortal coil.
It’s a good time to rewatch his movies and maybe even have a Phantasm marathon this weekend. And if you’ve never heard Reggie’s music before — outside of his unironically awesome “Have You Seen It” track from the aforementioned fourth Phantasm movie — now is as good a time as any to listen to the man sing and strum his heart out.
