How does it all end for Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his fellow Squid Game players? We won’t have to wait too long to find out. Netflix has revealed the release date for the third and final season of the dystopian drama: Friday, June 27th. Season 3 will debut just about six months after Squid Game Season 2, which is a far shorter period of time than the gap between the first and second seasons — the first season originally premiering Sept. 17th, 2021.
Without spoiling too much, Season 2 of Squid Game brought Seong Gi-hun back as a player in the mysterious games, while also revealing more about those working behind the scenes of the deadly competition. The season finale concluded with a dramatic cliffhanger that highlighted the intense power struggle at the center of the series — a struggle which we can now look forward to seeing resolved soon.
Squid Game became a surprise global hit for Netflix when it debuted over three years ago, with the first season getting 14 Emmy nominations and winning six, including Lee Jung-Jae receiving the award Lead Actor in a Drama Series. (If you’re wondering, only Season 2 of Squid Game will be eligible for the 2025 Emmys, as the cutoff for each year’s awards is May 31st.)
The series inspired a 2023 reality show entitled Squid Game: The Challenge — which, it could be argued, wildly missed the point of the original show. There was also an immersive real-life experience in 2022 that allowed fans to play the games from the show themselves.
