Film Festivals play a crucial role in the movie business, serving as the launch pad for movies, of course, but also often for kick-starting film-makers’ careers, setting the stage for awards season, giving upstart distributors a chance to make their mark, providing networking opportunities, and boosting local economies around the world. In this month’s edition of The Numbers Business Report, we wanted to focus on one aspect of film festivals: the acquisition of independent films by North American distributors.
In all, we found over 100 films acquired out of film festivals for North American distribution so far this year. The Report lists all of them, their acquiring distributor, and their current release plans. We also look at the films that sold for the most, the festivals that did the most business, and the distributors that have picked up the most titles. If you’re looking to buy or sell at a festival, we think this issue is a must-read.
