We start out 2025 at The Numbers Business Report by looking back at 2024 at the box office. The January edition recaps the successes, misses, and everything in between of 2024.
Two areas in particular of theatrical business stood out: sequels and PG-rated films. Nine of the top ten movies at the domestic box office were pure sequels. Six of these were the first sequel to blockbuster hits: Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Dune: Part Two, Twisters, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. On top of sequel success, 2024 was the year of PG-rated films, with over $3 billion in earnings and 38% of the 2024 market, up 14% from 2023. Prefer originals over sequels? The January report highlights the top non-sequel original movies, a.k.a. the true originals.
Additionally, we look at the top 10 distributors for the year and break down where their revenue came from, including production partners like Illumination Entertainment and Crunchyroll. And we look at the genres, production methods, creative types and ratings that are driving growth (or holding the market back).
The data doesn’t end there. Read the report for our full, in-depth coverage.
