Theater counts: Inside Out 2 takes off in 4,440 theaters

Bad Boys: Ride or Die provided a healthy bump for the box office last weekend as the latest installment in the franchise launched with $56.53 million in its opening frame. The action-comedy currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of $74.76 million while having secured over $123 million from global earnings. While the film easily topped the box office charts in its debut, it will be one and done for the Bad Boys at the top as Inside Out 2 arrives in a whopping 4,440 theaters.

The sequel to 2015’s Inside Out, the second feature in the Inside Out franchise follows newly-minted teenager Riley as Headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment show up. The film’s availability in 4,440 theaters ties it with 2019’s Frozen II as the 17th-widest release of all time. The original installment took in a solid $90 million in its opening weekend and ended its run with a worldwide take of over $850 million.

Also opening in wide release this week is the Polish set drama, Treasure, starring Lena Dunham, and Stephen Fry. Opening in 650 locations, the film, set in 1990, tells the story of an American journalist named Ruth who travels to Poland with her father Edek to visit his childhood places. Julia von Heinz directs the Bleecker Street film.

Rounding out the top five widest releases this weekend is last week’s chart topper in the aforementioned Bad Boys: Ride or Die, keeping its opening count of 3,885 as it enters its second week. Occupying the third place spot is The Garfield Movie, dropping 548 cinemas this week for a total of 3,411. Also retaining its starting count of 3,351 venues is the other newcomer from last weekend in The Watchers, while IF lands in 3,006 theaters.

Worthy of mentioning is the release of the historical drama Firebrand. Opening in 442 movie houses, the film, which is set in 1500’s Tudor England, stars Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, playing the roles of Katherine Par and Henry VIII, respectively.

Looking ahead to next week, we see two wide releases make their theatrical debut. The Bikeriders is set to open in approximately 2,500 locations.
