Joker: Folie à Deux will fall a stunning 81% from its opening weekend at the box office, as Terrifier 3 pulls off a surprise weekend win, and The Wild Robot has a good hold in its third weekend.
Here’s how the weekend numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…
The Terrifier franchise has become a decent box office force over the past three years. Terrifier 2 had a great run in 2022, ending with almost $11 million at the domestic box office. Since then, the original Terrifier has had a re-release in Summer last year (albeit to fairly modest receipts). The box office win for Terrifier 3 guarantees a Terrifier 4, and probably more after that.
That’s the good news at the box office this weekend. The bad news is that Joker: Folie à Deux is having a miserable second weekend, falling a precipitous 81% from its debut. It’ll struggle to hold on to any theaters next weekend and could well end with a domestic total under $60 million—a disaster for Warner Bros., who undoubtedly expected this to be one of their biggest films of the year.
Generally, this was an over-crowded weekend in theaters, and the other new releases mostly failed to make much of a mark. Piece by Piece is having the best weekend, and probably has the best chance of having a long run in theaters. Thoughts are turning rapidly to the next couple of weeks though, and the industry has to hold out hope that Smile 2 and Venom: The Last Dance will revive fortunes in theaters.
