Alfie Templeman postpones upcoming shows to seek help for “substance abuse issues and depression”

Alfie Templeman has postponed his upcoming shows to seek help for “substance abuse issues and depression”.

The indie singer was due to play shows with Bastille at Dreamland Margate, along with a slot at 110 Above Festival in Leicestershire.

However, Templeman has now postponed these shows, explaining on his social media: “Hey folks. Unfortunately my current mental state is making it impossible for me to be able to perform the shows I have scheduled next month.

“I now realise how important it is for me to go and get serious help for the substance abuse issuesand depression I’ve suffered in recent years”, he added.

He went on to say that he was “unbelievably sorry” for those excited to attend his upcoming shows, promising: “Once I’m better you’ll see a lot more of me again.” “You just never really know what’s going on in someone’s head,” he concluded. “Be kind to one another. Love you all and see you soon”.

In response to Templeman’s statement, 110 Above Festival said they were “incredibly saddened” to hear of Templeman’s cancellation, but added: “It takes real courage to recognise when you need help and to say so publicly. We have enormous respect for Alfie for putting his health first.”

We’re incredibly saddened to hear that Alfie Templeman won’t be able to join us this summer.

We’ve been lucky enough to watch Alfie grow as an artist over the years. We’ve always admired him not just for his incredible talent, but for the way he’s used his platform. He’s never… pic.twitter.com/utgg33nbjk

Templeman’s long-awaited debut ‘Mellow Moon’ in 2022 touched on themes of anxiety. In our four-star review of the record, we said: “‘Mellow Moon’ juggles the difficulty of finding fulfilment in the face of despair with a quiet undercurrent of optimism for brighter days ahead. Gently distorted closer, ‘Just Below The Above’, underscores the record’s aims succinctly through repeated affirmations: “Stay today and we’ll float away / After all these years we’re still okay.””

In an interview with NME at the time, he addressed his mental health on the song ‘Broken’, telling us: “I was in a pretty dark place when I was writing the lyrics for the album. ‘Broken’ came about because throughout the pandemic, I’d go into my own head, visit that dark corner and push everyone else away. I realised I needed to figure things out and address what was happening because the only person that can really change you, is you.

“The deeper you go, the more painful it is, but you also discover more about yourself,” he added. “It’s just part of growing up but I became less interested in what other people thought about me and cared more about how I felt about myself. ‘Broken’ shaped the whole of ‘Mellow Moon’ though because after I wrote it, I was more comfortable putting other songs on the record that were deeper, darker and more honest about how I felt.”
