The bizarre moment happened on Fox Sports Live before Argentina faced Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. Spain ultimately claimed a 1-0 victory after extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute to secure La Roja’s second World Cup win.
TV personality Jenny Taft had asked Donald Trump how proud he felt watching fans worldwide embrace the United States during the tournament. His response took an immediate detour. “Well, I watched, and it started with Scotland, and all of a sudden they’re doing things that nobody has ever seen with the bagpipes. And it was beautiful,” Trump said. “And it just went to every country. And we’re the hottest country in the world right now” (via The Mirror USA).
The comment on the World Cup sidestepped the original question entirely. It came amid existing controversy over Trump’s outspoken involvement in the tournament, including the previous pressure on FIFA chief Gianni Infantino regarding a red card shown to USA striker Folarin Balogun.
Additionally, Trump’s soccer commentary had already been criticized days earlier. He publicly questioned England manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactical decision to use captain Harry Kane in another role during their semifinal defeat to Argentina.
Moreover, Trump’s attendance at MetLife Stadium drew audible boos from sections of the crowd. Noise levels reportedly jumped from 78 decibels of ambient sound to 84 decibels when he walked onto the pitch alongside Infantino.
During the trophy presentation, the president positioned himself prominently for photographs before Infantino subtly guided him away from centre stage.
