The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s alleged abduction has taken another turn. The law enforcement has pushed back against a Reuters report that cited an anonymous FBI official claiming that at least three ransom letters were fake.
The FBI says Reuters’ reporting does not accurately reflect the status of the ransom notes
On June 30, Reuters published a report. It stated that the FBI’s assessment of inauthenticity covered the two ransom notes reported in early February, days after the 84-year-old mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie vanished, as well as a third, more recent message from an individual claiming to know the identities of the kidnappers. None of the ransom notes appear to be authentic, the FBI official told Reuters.
However, now, as per TMZ, law enforcement said the report claiming the ransom notes were fake was inaccurate. TMZ mentioned it received more than a dozen emails from the same man claiming to know the kidnapper’s identity and Nancy’s location while denying any involvement in the crime. In his first email, sent days after the abduction, he allegedly demanded one Bitcoin in exchange for the information, writing that “time is more than relevant.”
According to Air Mail, in a note dated February 2, the alleged abductor reportedly demanded $4 million in bitcoin and said Nancy was “safe but scared.” The second ransom note, reportedly sent on February 6, allegedly apologized and offered to return Guthrie’s body in exchange for money. The note accurately described Guthrie’s clothing on the night she was abducted and referenced a damaged floodlight in her backyard.
Nancy was last seen on the night of January 31 after arriving home from dining with family in the Catalina Foothills, Arizona. Surveillance footage from her home showed a masked individual, and authorities discovered her blood at the location. No arrests have been made, and investigators have not reported any new leads. According to the BBC, the family has offered a $1 million reward for information, alongside a $100,000 reward from the FBI.
