Horror Highlights: THE LAST KISS, FLAPJAX, TAKE IT BACK, HALLOWEEN TEAM

Watch the Trailer for THE LAST KISS: “From the studio that brought you Five Nights at Freddy’s and Obsession, Blumhouse Atomic Monster brings a fun and twisted coming-of-age mystery thriller that will keep audiences on their toes and guessing until the very end.  Director and co-writer Yoko Okumura (Unseen) delivers a stylistic slasher with a unique twist in THE LAST KISS, premiering at home exclusively on digital platforms to watch with no ads or subscription required starting September 15, 2026, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Laurel (Mckenna Grace) always imagined her first kiss would be like something out of a fairy tale. Instead, that fantasy turns into a nightmare when she discovers she’s cursed with an ability to see the death of anyone she kisses. After a vision reveals her crush is doomed to die in a strange murder spree targeting her closest friends, she races to unmask the killer before the mystery becomes a massacre. THE LAST KISS features exciting performances from Mckenna Grace (Scream 7, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2), Jaden Michael (“Colin in Black & White”), and Arkira Chantaratananond (Twinless).”

The Last Kiss is a colorful fun teen slasher romance, meant to be the perfect spooky sleepover movie for the mystery lover of all ages.  It takes the real anxiety and horror that surrounds a first kiss and escalates it to life or death stakes. The mythology of what the kiss has meant to humans inspired the fairy tale homage woven through the film’s aesthetic, score and visual language.  In a world where many of us fear intimacy and romance, I hope Laurel’s winding journey can offer a respite and maybe even a little hope that all may not be lost.

It was a dream to collaborate with Blumhouse Atomic Monster for the second time to bring this film to life, and I promise you’ll be blown away by superstar Mckenna Grace’s stellar performance as Laurel and the rest of the stellar cast. As summer turns to fall, gather your friends, gather your family, get cozy under the blanket with a bucket of pumpkin spice popcorn and enjoy The Last Kiss at home!

    -Director Yoko Okumura

Steve Niles and Brian Walsby Team for Take It Back Graphic Memoir on DC Legends Gray Matter: “Revolution summer comes alive again just in time for fall in the new and deeply personal story of life on and off stage. Take It Back: Life, Anxiety, and Gray Matter is released this week through DiWulf Publishing!

The story of one of Washington, DC’s most beloved bands comes to the page in a brand new graphic novel written by Gray Matter bassist and celebrated horror writer Steve Niles, illustrated by Brian Walsby, and lettered by Monica Richards. It is the story of friendship and the strength needed to overcome personal challenges amidst the background of a vibrant DC music scene.

“Of all the things I’ve written, Take it Back was the most challenging. It’s a very personal story about my time with Gray Matter and life in general” says Steve Niles. “It’s much harder to address mental health battles than it is to write about vampires and werewolves. I’m very thankful to everybody who helped put it together and to DiWulf for publishing.”

Writer Steve Niles is best known for horror comics 30 Days of Night, The October Faction, Frankenstein Alive! Alive! as well as his notorious monster hunter detective, Cal McDonald. But before he found his voice on the page, Niles cut his creative teeth in the fertile and influential 1980s Washington DC punk rock scene, where he played bass for years with the legendary Dischord band, Gray Matter. This book not only delves into Steve’s formative years, providing a candid look into his personal struggles, it also serves as a heartfelt tribute to the original DIY culture that inspired the DC punk and hardcore scene.

Brian Walsby is best known for his eyecatching artwork on t-shirts and album covers, including work with 7 Seconds, Descendents, The Birthday Party, Melvins, Die Kruezen, Big Star as well as illustrations in the essential underground We Got Power magazine and more.

Take It Back: Life, Anxiety and Gray Matter is available now directly from the publisher for $20.00. Don’t miss this essential document of one of the world’s most influential music scenes; whose enduring influence can be felt in virtually every corner of culture.”

HALLOWEEN TEAM re-launches as a self-published series this Halloween Season – with the return of “HALLOWEEN TEAM: SHADOWS” sequel series, and new artist Danny Roberts: [From the Press Release] Just in time for Spooky Season and Halloween, the hit comic book series Halloween Team is back from the dead – now self-published by creator Danny Baram and his All-New All-Awesome Comics label.

To kick off the re-launch, the original HALLOWEEN TEAM miniseries was recently made available once again on major digital comics retailers – including Amazon/Comixology, GlobalComix, Comix. One, DriveThruComics, and Barnes & Noble. All four issues are available individually, alongside a discounted Complete Collection. In the original series, writer Danny Baram joins forces with artist Matt Shults for a fun, spooky adventure that fans of properties like Buffy and Stranger Things are sure to enjoy. The story follows five friends who, as kids, solved mysteries and fought monsters in their small town of Greenwood, MA. Now, twenty years later, a new mystery brings the team together for one more adventure.

The sequel series, HALLOWEEN TEAM: SHADOWS, picks up right where the previous story leaves off. This four-issue sequel answers burning questions, and raises new ones, as the adventure that began in the first volume continues. The sequel introduces new heroes, new villains, and expands the scale and scope of the plotline – as the reunited members of Halloween Team face their greatest threat to date, all while dealing with the emotional fallout and mistrust that simmers in the wake of the first story-arc’s stunning revelations.

The first issue of HALLOWEEN TEAM: SHADOWS re-releases on digital retailers on Tuesday, September 15th – with a new, special edition. New artist Danny Roberts comes onboard, providing cleaned-up lettering and other touch-ups for Issues #1 and #2 (supplementing the existing interior art from Buğra Berah) – before fully taking the reigns on art duties for Issues #3 and #4. Roberts, an accomplished videogame artist and painter, brings a kinetic energy and dynamism to the book that proves a great fit for the terrifying, otherworldly threats and blockbuster action in the latter part of the story.

HALLOWEEN TEAM: SHADOWS #2 – never-before-released, finally goes live this October, prior to Halloween. It features interior art by Bugra Berah and an all-new cover from Danny Roberts. Look out for it on the digital comics retailers listed above on Tuesday, October 13th. Issue #3 will release before the end of the year, with Issue #4 soon to follow – both fully drawn by Roberts.

All four issues of HALLOWEEN TEAM: SHADOWS will also feature special flashback sequences, detailing pivotal moments from the team’s history, illustrated by original series artist Matt Shults.

Halloween Team’s 2026 return marks the culmination of a project that originally kicked off in 2022, when Halloween Team #1 initially released. Creator Danny Baram looks forward to finally reaching a finale that’s been years in the making: “Getting the Halloween Team series to this point has been a long journey, filled with a lot of unexpected bumps in the road – but I’m incredibly excited that we’re finally back on track, and able to get the full Shadows sequel series out there. It’s been a lot of fun working with our new artist, Danny Roberts, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what he’s been working on. I really love his fresh take on the characters, and he’s bringing a new energy and electricity to the book.”

New Halloween Team artist Danny Roberts shares Baram’s enthusiasm: “It’s been exciting to come aboard this project and have a chance to put my own spin on these great characters. Halloween Team combines a lot of my favorite things into one big, fun story – horror, action, nostalgia – there really is something for everyone here, and that’s kept me on my toes. In a good way!”

HALLOWEEN TEAM is a compelling, character-first saga that blends horror, adventure, mystery, and romance. Upon its initial digital release in 2022, HALLOWEEN TEAM garnered positive reviews and was covered by major outlets like GamesRadar / Newsarama, Daily Dead, and Fanbase Press.

“Our hope is to really make a splash with this next chapter of the story,” says Baram. “While Halloween Team: Shadows will deliver a satisfying and emotional ending to the story that began in the original series, Halloween Team was always designed to be open-ended. I would love nothing more than to get to a place where the series could continue. There are already a lot of fun possibilities in terms of where we could go from here!”

Halloween Team merchandise is also available via both Threadless and Redbubble, with logo T-shirts, hats, mugs, and more. “Matt Shults designed an amazing logo for us, and it looks great on T-shirts and other apparel that are perfect for Halloween parties and other events.” Baram adds: “I’m also talking with Danny Roberts about some other cool promotional items for down the road. Stay tuned!”
