Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster reportedly started preparing for a private wedding in New York, but one unresolved issue stood in the way. According to an insider, Foster’s pending divorce prevented the couple from setting a firm date.
The source claimed Jackman and Foster wanted to marry early next year. They had already discussed the type of ceremony they preferred. However, they reportedly could not finalize those plans until Foster’s divorce became official.

The insider told Woman’s Day that the couple wanted an intimate celebration rather than a large Hollywood event. They reportedly envisioned a ceremony with only about 20 close friends and relatives.
“This is something they’ve put off for months,” the source claimed. “Sutton had hoped for her divorce to be done by now, but things are moving forward again and she and Hugh can’t wait to be married.”
According to the insider, Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup’s low-key 2023 courthouse wedding helped inspire the couple’s reported plans. Jackman and Foster allegedly liked the idea of a weekday ceremony at City Hall or a Manhattan courthouse.
The source claimed they also wanted to include one theatrical element. As longtime stage performers, the pair reportedly discussed having a piano at the ceremony and possibly writing and singing their vows.
Their proposed guest list could include several famous friends. The insider named Ryan Reynolds, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Watts and Crudup as possible attendees. Jackman’s children, Oscar and Ava, and Foster’s daughter, Emily, could also play roles in the celebration, according to the report.
The couple allegedly considered a larger Broadway-inspired gathering after the ceremony. Possible locations included Cafe Carlyle and the Winter Garden Theatre, where Jackman and Foster previously starred together in The Music Man.
Despite those ideas, the Sutton Foster divorce remained the main obstacle. The source said the couple hoped to marry by Valentine’s Day but could not confirm a date until her divorce papers received final approval.
“They’d love to do it around the Thanksgiving/Christmas period as it’s easy for family to travel, but until Sutton’s papers are signed, every date is a pencil mark,” the insider said.
