In a new interview with The Cut, Lily Allen explained how sobriety has reshaped her experience on the road.
“This is the first tour that I’ve done sober,” she said after acknowledging that she had previously performed while drunk and high.
Her post-show routine now looks very different.
Lily Allen said she and her team sometimes come offstage and play Monopoly. On other nights, she puts on pajamas, gets into a car and heads straight back to her hotel. The singer admitted that she occasionally misses celebrating after a performance. However, she does not miss the hangovers, pounding headaches or arriving at airports smelling of alcohol.
Sobriety has also changed the way Lily Allen processes the adrenaline of performing. She described the feeling of an audience singing her lyrics back as almost drug-like because of the intense rush it creates.
Her current tour supports West End Girl, the deeply personal album that chronicles the breakdown of her marriage to David Harbour, who later responded to the project.
The production itself is intentionally theatrical. Lily Allen stays in character and avoids speaking directly to the audience during the show. That creative decision has drawn some backlash. She previously defended the tour after complaints about its length and format. Still, the singer appears comfortable with the quieter life happening once the curtain falls.
For Lily Allen, the biggest change may be simple: Monopoly has replaced the booze and drugs that once came with touring.
