The Stranger opens on a premise you have seen before and knows it. Amanda is grieving a murdered husband when she moves with her daughter Karli into an isolated bed and breakfast in the British countryside. Kyle turns up looking for a room. He proves much harder to get rid of than anyone expected. For a good stretch this looks like a home invasion thriller that has picked its lane and intends to stay in it.
That familiarity turns out to be a setup. Mike Clarke and Paul Gerrard spend the first act letting Kyle become the problem before suggesting he might not be the worst thing in the area. After making the festival and VOD rounds in 2022, The Stranger is getting a new UK digital release through Trinity Content Partners.
The Movie Refuses to Say What It Is
Around the halfway mark Kyle stops reading as a straightforward threat and the film drifts somewhere weirder. Figures in black gather around the property. Voices and phone calls arrive without any clear line between manipulation and something that should not be able to call you. The movie that was about a man who will not leave becomes a movie about what followed him there, and that refusal to stay put is the best thing about it. A small British home invasion picture has all the room in the world to be competent and forgettable. This one pulls in occult horror and creature feature instincts without dropping the family drama it started with, and the grief between Amanda and Karli is still sitting underneath everything.
Damien Ashley is what holds it together. Kyle has to work as two possibilities at once, believable as the threat inside the house and believable as a man genuinely terrified of something bigger than he is, and Ashley keeps both readings live without tipping which one he is playing. He is unsettling in scenes where he is doing nothing in particular. Jennifer K. Preston matters for the opposite reason, because Amanda cannot match Kyle’s frequency without the movie turning into noise, and Isabella Percival’s Karli adds another pressure point in a mother and daughter relationship already strained before anybody knocks on the door. The winter countryside is stark and empty and gives the film production value that its limited resources could never have manufactured on a soundstage. All of that carries stretches where the pacing sags and atmosphere gets asked to do work the plot should be doing.
The Mystery Outruns the Answers
The figures in black are effective exactly because the film does not explain them right away. Not knowing what they are is the best sustained feeling the movie produces, and I am not about to argue that horror owes anybody a full accounting. Answers are not automatically scarier than questions. Plenty of good ideas have been explained straight into the ground. But there is a difference between withholding and stopping, and Kyle’s pursuers become the most interesting element in the film at almost exactly the moment the story loses interest in them. What they want and how they connect to him gets sketched and then abandoned.
Here is the part that sticks with me. The film’s limitations rarely show up in the way it looks. They show up in how far the story is willing to follow its own best idea. The mythology keeps expanding until the movie reaches the point where it needs to give us just a little more and quietly declines. That is not the same as leaving a monster in the dark on purpose. The Stranger gets close enough to something fascinating that the last few steps it will not take become the thing you remember.
