Anna Pigeon Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Yep, All the Pigeon Sisters (and Jesse) Feels!

The Pigeon sisters are everything I could’ve possibly wanted, and I need more!

We may have gone into Anna Pigeon Season 1 Episode 9 ready to riot over sweet Jesse, but a girl was quickly distracted when we finally got that in-person Pigeon sister reunion.

And a busy hour answered the question of who shot Jesse, dug into his background, filled in some of the blanks of Anna’s childhood and past, reminded us of just how awful Jeremiah is, and made a break in the investigation into Zach’s death. See what I mean about busy?!

Anna Pigeon is so unserious sometimes, because at the end of Anna Pigeon Season 1 Episode 8, I was ready to fight the world over Jesse getting shot.

Did I think he’d die? Of course not; the series isn’t so cruel as to deprive us of Cooper Levy‘s charm.

But I also didn’t expect this adorable dork to somehow crawl out of the river, bypass everything and everyone, and collapse at Anna’s doorstep. He’s so down bad for her that it’s hilarious sometimes.

Jesse Garland, or rather, Jesse Fields, is safe, and that’s all we care about in the end.

Because the second they brought up that he had a different last name and Taryn was there looking shady, I suspected his warrant was likely because of his environmental activism and his being on the right side of something.

Would anyone ever believe that his sweet face would be behind killing someone? I think not.

    (Michelle Faye/USA Network)

Interestingly, they threw us for a loop because it seemed like Jesse got shot because of something relating to the poisoning of the late. That would’ve made sense and been the clearest path to connect some of the plot points that the series is juggling.

But instead, we got the twist that Harold shot Jesse because he thought Jesse was the one responsible for switching out the valves on a pipeline that killed his father. Finding out Jesse had a warrant out on him for something like that was insane!

Just when I thought the real loser of the hour was the American healthcare system that got our guy to seek out Anna rather than a hospital, the justice system nearly gave it a run for its money and left a park ranger properly investigating a case better than the Feds and whatnot!

But, like Anna, surely none of us doubted for a second that Jesse was behind any of that, and the truth was that Harold’s dad was in a bed with a shady company, and Jesse had nothing to do with what happened to him.

I loved all the little bits that helped Anna figure this out, including enlisting help from Blackfeet kids at the center.

    ( Michelle Faye/USA Network)

It’s safe to say Jesse won’t be headed out of town or taking the career opportunity Taryn offered him. But that’s fine, especially since Anna is really coming to grips with how much he means to her—and that fear she had of losing him, combined with her desire to clear his name, speaks volumes.

Fortunately, Jesse is back to realizing he maybe moved too fast, and he seems content to go back to the way things were.

The timing of all of this was interesting because we had Molly actually making her debut at the campsite, and it’s something I’ve been waiting for all season!

Helfer and Spiridakos have such great chemistry, and it was nice to spend most of the hour fully experiencing the Pigeon sisters’ dynamic, bumps and all.

Molly was struggling a bit because Anna hadn’t told her so much, and she had to keep charming people into spilling the beans. I didn’t even think about the fact that she hadn’t told Anna about the cave at all.

    ( Michelle Faye/USA Network)

And that entire thread has been a difficult one because why exactly does Manny feel he absolutely has to leave if Anna stays there? Anna doesn’t want him to leave; she doesn’t hold him accountable for what Bethany did.

Yet Manny has been avoiding Anna, and we still don’t know what his dynamic is with Jeremiah or why he’d even want one with him if it comes down to it. Hell, it’s not like Jeremiah has any love for Bethany.

That conversation with Molly really showcased his character, and he doesn’t care for anyone but himself.

But Manny isn’t that type of guy, so what gives?

Anyhoo, at least Manny gave Molly the information she needed, since Anna doesn’t tell her as much.

    ( Michelle Faye/USA Network)

It’s such a catch-22 here. Molly definitely embodies that Eldest Daughter Syndrome. From the second she waltzed into the room, they bickered in classic sibling fashion, and you could tell she tends to have the most authority most of the time.

Their dynamic is messy and complicated, but that’s what made it so interesting to watch and the highlight of the hour.

Molly is a tough one because you can sense that she carries with her the weight of having to parent Anna. Her lines about Anna being her saddest child, and the way she expressed concern and worry, truly felt like a helicopter parent.

In many ways, it sounds like Molly made taking care of Anna so central to her identity that she doesn’t really know what life looks like outside of that. There’s an element to Anna being so headstrong, fearless, and “wild” that Molly probably envies because she’s never had that ability herself.

Molly’s approach to moments with Anna shows a lot of concern, and much of it is perfectly reasonable and understandable. But some of it also comes from someone trying to manage an adult woman she’s afraid to let go of.

    ( Michelle Faye/USA Network)

In that, Molly also expressed that she wished it felt more mutual—that Anna would sometimes listen to her and take care of her, too.

On the one hand, it mirrors that parental/child dynamic because, generally, even if parents crave it, children go off to live their lives, and they can be a bit self-absorbed, sure.

But then when you consider that Molly has spent her entire life in a parental role she never asked for but wholly embraced anyway after their flaky parents abandoned them, well, you truly sympathize with her.

After all, it sounds like Molly never had the chance to be the child, and she wants Anna to give her some of the things Anna has given her.

Meanwhile, Anna respects Molly and embraces the fact that her older sister is always there to encourage her and give her the tough love, truth, and whatever else she needs.

    ( Michelle Faye/USA Network)

But she also takes Molly for granted and doesn’t always notice when Molly needs something from her.

For all of Molly’s advice, I wish she’d embrace half of it for herself—find love, open up her heart, make sure she doesn’t make Anna her entire life, learn from her fearless younger sister, and actually remember to live her own, too!

Watching the two sisters fight was tough, but it’s what they needed, and watching them make up was even sweeter. The Pigeon sisters are everything I could’ve wanted them to be.

Seeing just how close they are and knowing that Molly really would do anything for her sister does make the inconsistencies, if you will, with Molly’s statement about that night make sense.

And now Stanton’s efforts to help Anna out with this case, looking into Zach’s murder, figuring out the woman with the red coat, and hoping that he can find out the truth about Zach’s death have only gotten more complicated.

    ( Michelle Faye/USA Network)

His efforts to help Anna could actually put a target on her back and have her investigated further now that we know Molly lied about how long she was Anna’s alibi. Oops!

Of course, when Molly crossed paths with Jeremiah and even talked to him about Anna, it was so frustrating and worrisome. Jeremiah is so conniving, and I wanted him nowhere near Molly AT ALL.

I can also admit that Helfer and Kim Coates have great chemistry despite that.

But if there was even a flicker of a moment of enjoying that for what it was, that all went to hell in a handbasket when the revelation came that the reason Geoff’s dog was sick, and all those dead fish have been floating to the surface, is because Jeremiah bought up all that line and has been poisoning the water!

Ugh, that man is diabolical; I cannot stand it!

Over to you, Anna Pigeon Fanatics! Did you love having the Pigeon sisters together again? We need to discuss Jeremiah poisoning the water!
