Chris Pratt wants to return to the MCU as Star-Lord. Considering how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended, Pratt’s return is a matter of when, not if. When Pratt eventually comes back, Marvel must do more than give him a cameo in an Avengers movie.
Pratt recently shared an update on his “ongoing conversations” with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito. Pratt said that fans will see Star-Lord again and that “he’s not going anywhere.” But as for when that might happen, Pratt remarked that he’s “not at liberty to say.”
If Pratt is telling the truth, Star-Lord will appear again. When it happens, though, doesn’t matter as much as how. Marvel needs to make sure they give the character a meaningful return and not just a temporary appearance.
Chris Pratt’s potential return as Star-Lord should be more than an Avengers cameo
Marvel will pack its next two movies, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with new and returning characters. Some of these characters, including the Fantastic Four, will be pillars of the MCU’s future. For others, especially Fox’s X-Men characters, these films likely mark the final chapter.
While it will be cool to see Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, their appearances feel more like an extended cameo. The new X-Men movie is coming in 2028, so Marvel doesn’t need most of these older X-Men characters anymore.
With all due respect to Fox’s X-Men, Pratt’s Star-Lord is much more important to the MCU’s history. Star-Lord led the Guardians of the Galaxy and played an integral role in the three Guardians films as well as Infinity War and Endgame. He’s built a strong relationship with fans and deserves a triumphant return.
The end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 revealed that Star-Lord will return. Having him appear in Doomsday or Secret Wars as his swan song would be a waste of time. Marvel should give him a project with substance. For example, Star-Lord could have a significant role in the Nova movie that is in development.
If Steve Rogers can return and have a big role in Avengers: Doomsday, then Star-Lord can have a notable role in a significant project.
