Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman sent a congratulatory note around to staff, which you can read below.

“The movie business will knock you around. So please take a beat today and savor the feeling. Number one of all time. Pretty darn cool,” wrote Rothman. As we told you, the movie beat Spider-Man: No Way Home a while ago, both domestic and globally ($814.8M, $1.92B WW) to become Sony’s highest grossing of all-time.

Sony is bound to have a hit this weekend, firing up autumn in Zach Cregger’s revival of Resident Evil in what’s poised to definitely be a record bow for the franchise both stateside with $40M-$50M, and worldwide around $80M.

    Here’s Rothman’s email below:

    Dear Colleagues,

There are milestones. And then there are moments that make history.

Last night, somewhere in the broad expanse of North America, some lucky soul purchased a ticket to Spider-Man: Brand New Day that made it the highest grossing film in the history of our country. This is a monumental achievement on the part of everyone who works in all parts of SPE, as we are also the third-highest grossing film of all time worldwide.

I want to express my gratitude to Ravi and everyone in Tokyo for their consistent support of the film company, to Destin, Amy, Kevin, Rachel and all of the terrific filmmakers and cast, especially our long-time partner, the fabulously talented Tom Holland. And to all of you!

The movie business will knock you around. So please take a beat today and savor the feeling. Number one of all time. Pretty darn cool.

    Thank you all,

    Tom
