WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham Weighs In on Sydney Sweeney’s Messy Ad Drama

WNBA star Sophie Cunningham has finally shared her thoughts on Sydney Sweeney’s controversial gambling ad, and she has plenty to say. While Cunningham called the campaign “unauthentic” and admitted she didn’t really like it, she also made it clear that Sweeney is free to make her own choices and “do your thing, sis.”

Sophie Cunningham calls Sydney Sweeney’s gambling ad “unauthentic” but defends her choice

Cunningham addressed the viral commercial on her newly rebranded podcast, No Hesitation With Sophie Cunningham & Drew Hanlen. For context, the ad features Sweeney posing in minimal clothing alongside sports equipment for a sports prediction platform, which quickly got people talking.

First, Cunningham questioned whether Sweeney even gambles on sports. “The amount of text messages, DMs, comments of people wanting me to talk about the Sydney Sweeney ad. I have so many takes, but like it’s just first of all, like does she even gamble on sports? Like it’s just so unauthentic. You know what I mean?” she said.

At the same time, Cunningham said she wasn’t exactly shocked by the way Sweeney presented the brand. “Like, am I surprised of how she represented the brand? No. Like, that’s what she’s made her whole career off.” Still, she admitted, “Do I like it? Like, that particular ad. Not really. Like, I think, what are we doing?” However, she quickly added, “She’s making her money. Go do your thing, sis.”

The Indiana Fever guard also questioned why women were upset. “Why are girls mad? Like, that is literally what she does. Why is anyone mad?” she said. While she found the ad “kind of weird” morally, she added, “to each their own.”

Cunningham also said women shouldn’t tear one another down over choices like this. Despite her criticism, she made it clear that she likes Sweeney. “And hey, don’t get me wrong, I like her.”

Meanwhile, Sweeney responded to some of the criticism by sharing photos of male and female athletes who had posed nude for ESPN The Magazine. Some critics, however, pointed out that Sweeney herself is not an athlete.
