Netflix just earned itself another underrated alien movie, featuring an actor from Purgatory (2026). The sci-fi comedy Save Yourselves! stars John Reynolds and actress Sunita Mani from A Nice Indian Boy. Released in theaters in 2020, the movie was written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.
Save Yourselves! follows a couple who go off the grid just as an alien invasion begins. Mani plays Surina “Su” Raji, a millennial trying to break her screen addiction and mend her relationship, while Reynolds joins her as her partner, Jack “Jackie” Wyndam, who goes offline as the apocalypse hits.
Ben Sinclair joins the lead as Raph, with John Early as Blake, Jo Firestone as Desi, Johanna Day as Judy, and Amy Sedaris and Zenobia Shroff as the voices of Jack and Su’s mother, respectively.
How Save Yourselves! turns a digital detox into a disaster
Save Yourselves! follows Jack and Su, a burnt-out, technology-dependent millennial Brooklyn couple, who feel their constant doomscrolling is destroying their relationship. To save their relationship, they decide to disconnect from their smartphones for a week at a remote upstate cabin.
But things go awry when their well-intentioned digital detox turns into an apocalyptic disaster. Turns out, the day they choose to head for an off-grid retreat is the exact day that furry, extraterrestrial balls called “pouffes” invade the Earth. In a way, ironically enough, their digital detox leaves them completely unaware that the Earth is being invaded by the murderous, ethanol-loving aliens.
The movie earned a nice $301,162 at the box office (per The Numbers) and opened to generally positive critical reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an 89% approval rating, based on 91 reviews, with an average of 6.7/10. Metacritic also assigned it a score of 67 out of 100, based on 15 critics, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.
Although it initially premiered on Hulu, you can now stream Save Yourselves! on Netflix.
