Paramount Pictures has shared the first official trailer for Passenger, the newest supernatural horror thriller from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2026, pitting it directly against Disney’s The Mandalorian and Grogu and Neon’s I Love Boosters movies.
“A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses an accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon, they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go,” reads the movie’s initial description.

What happens in the Passenger trailer?
The video begins with two friends driving on a dark highway. When one of them stops for a quick break, their seemingly normal road trip turns into a nightmare after the other suddenly goes missing. This sets up the movie’s dark tone and chilling vibe, as an uninvited passenger terrorizes them. The trailer then shifts to the film’s main characters, who must try to find a way to outrun that unholy entity that has been following them throughout their journey.
Passenger is directed by Øvredal from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. This marks the Norwegian filmmaker’s latest horror movie after 2023’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The cast is led by Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Lou Llobell (Foundation), and Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life). The film is produced by Gary Dauberman and Walter Hamada, with Jenny Hinkey serving as an executive producer.
