Movie Review: Hell’s Highway: The True Story Of Highway Safety Films

Hell’s Highway: The True Story Of Highway Safety Films – Review by Matt Boiselle

If you grew up hearing rumors about those infamous driver’s education films—the ones that supposedly traumatized an entire generation with graphic car crashes and mangled bodies—Hell’s Highway: The True Story About Highway Safety Films finally separates fact from folklore. And yes…they really were that brutal.

Director Bret Wood dives headfirst into the bizarre history behind the Mansfield, Ohio-produced safety films that found their way into classrooms throughout the 1960s and ’70s. Movies like Signal 30 didn’t believe in subtlety. Their philosophy was essentially, “You know what prevents speeding? Showing teenagers actual corpses.” It’s certainly a strategy…whether it was a good strategy is another discussion entirely.

What makes Hell’s Highway so enjoyable is that it isn’t just a compilation of gruesome clips designed for shock value. Wood interviews the people who actually created these films, offering fascinating insight into why they thought graphic realism was the best way to teach highway safety. The documentary explores how these films became cultural legends after disappearing from classrooms, eventually achieving almost mythical status among horror fans, film historians, and anyone who ever heard someone say, “I swear they made us watch a movie where they showed real dead people.”

This newly reconstructed edition is also a noticeable improvement over the original 2002 release. The remastered 16mm interview footage looks better than ever, while the restored educational films preserve these strange pieces of Americana with a surprising amount of care. For film preservation enthusiasts, that’s almost as interesting as the documentaries themselves.

The pacing occasionally slows during some of the interview segments, and viewers looking for wall-to-wall crash footage may find themselves wishing for a little less talking and a little more twisted educational cinema. But that’s a minor complaint in an otherwise engaging documentary that balances historical context with genuine curiosity.

Hell’s Highway is a fascinating look at a time when public safety campaigns apparently operated under the assumption that emotional scarring was just another educational tool.   Whether you’re interested in exploitation cinema, obscure documentaries, or simply want to know why generations of parents still talk about “those driver’s ed films,” this documentary delivers an entertaining and surprisingly informative ride.

The film will be hitting select theaters on August 8th, so hop in for what will be a truly entertaining ride!
